Merchants Stands the Test of Time...
And a little fire and a lot of water!
On May 31 the morning prep team was at Merchants, doing their usual prep duties, when all of a sudden the day took quite the turn. A small fire broke out in a smoker on the third floor and triggered the sprinkler system, dousing the 126-year-old building in water for nearly an hour. Thankfully, no one was hurt and quick responses from staff and the Nashville Fire Department minimized damage.
Though the restaurant had to close for the day due to dampened interiors, spirits of the employees and community were not. We received tons of inquiries on the status of the restaurant. People cheered us open and asked how they could help. The next day, though the restaurant was still closed while clean up continued, the general manager showed up to find the kitchen staff waiting outside, ready to help clean and repair their beloved restaurant.
The Merchants building has seen more than a century pass. Its origin as a pharmacy saw men who fought in the Civil War. As a hotel in the 1940’s and 50’s, it gave reprieve to famous Opry stars - way before they were famous. As a restaurant for the past 30 years, it has fed some of the most powerful people in the city. 401 Broadway is strong and resilient, tireless and determined, and if you look at the history of the building and those who have been a part of it, it seems as if they are too.
We are thankful for our dedicated employees and the warm embrace from the Nashville community. Merchants is up and running. Now come join us for a meal!
