Celebrate Derby Day at Downtown Sporting Club!
The NFL Draft swept through our city like a long-anticipated storm. The weatherman forecasted one helluva downpour, with an estimated 100,000 people raining down on lower Broadway every day for four days straight, and for once the predictions were correct. But almost as quickly as the storm came rolling in...it dissipated. *Lets out a massive sigh of relief* So what happens now that downtown has [almost completely] recovered and regained its gentle balance of constant country music, billions of bachelorettes, and oppressively hot, humid air?
We find other things to celebrate.
Gone for now are troves of fans in football jerseys and face paint; instead, we welcome flocks of women in extraordinarily wide-brimmed hats, accompanied by men in seersucker suits. The Kentucky Derby — one of the high points in horse racing season — takes place this Saturday, May 4th in Churchill Downs, Kentucky, but here in Nashville we’re planning to celebrate the big event, too. (Plus, Nashville’s annual horse race, The Iroquois Steeplechase, is next weekend, so this is a great chance to ya know….practice).
The just-opened Downtown Sporting Club is already throwing a party to celebrate Derby Day, and as a so called “sporting club” we have to admit it seems like an appropriate thing for them to do. With one bazillion televisions on the 2nd floor in their sports bar dubbed The R.E.C. Room, in addition to an extremely large 14ft. projector screen prime for race-viewing, there will be ample opportunity to watch, cheer, and hedge your bets on whatever horse + jockey you think reign supreme. And possibly the best part about it? Unlike the actual Kentucky Derby, DSC’s party is completely ticket-free! Which means the only thing you need to buy is a kickass outfit before you come and probably some food and drinks once you arrive. (Or hell! Wear whatever you please! That’s totally fine too).
Be sure to get there early or go online and make a reservation for one of The R.E.C. Room’s banquettes, which seat up to 6 with plenty of extra space for outlandishly large hats if you so choose to don one. Each comes with its own private television so you can watch The Derby (or heck...whatever else you want to watch — it’s your television while you’re there!) and sip on juleps aplenty. Not only are DSC’s bartenders set to whip up classic mint juleps just for the occasion, but they’ll also be offering a large-format version that serves up to 10 people. Plus, the Gatorade thermos and twisty straws make it a bit less fancy and pretty dang irresistible.
Sounds to us like this Derby party is just about as good as it gets, folks!
Downtown Sporting Club will open at 11am this Saturday and plans to celebrate all day long...so plan to get there early and stay there late!
