Weekly Top 5: Jordan Farrell

Weekly Top 5: Jordan Farrell

As of late, I’ve been feeling a total mixed bag of emotions.  I mean, it’s ☀️SUMMER☀️...and my complexion is happy and I’m getting Vitamin D out the wazoo - - - but couple that with the current state of the world and I easily find myself drifting off to a solid state of bummertown.  While self-care and positive vibes are important (and necessary) I also find it just as important to stay informed...even when the news isn’t as...serene...as one would hope.

This week, I’m focusing my Weekly Top 5 on what’s keeping me up when there are so many downs that also deserve my attention:

1. The Daily

Let’s start heavy, shall we?  The Daily is by and large my favorite podcast.  I listen to it, well, daily, and often find myself longing for it on the weekend. In 20 minutes, host Michael Barbaro fills you in on several of the most pressing issues happening in the world.  It’s powered by The New York Times, so you know it’s good.  They actually recently did a 5-part series on the status of the European Union, posing the question: “Can the European Union Survive?”.  The content is eye-opening, to say the least. Give 20 minutes of your day to learn the important stuff -- it’s worth it, even when it can be difficult to hear.

2. The Bachelorette

Ahhhh - sweet, sweet bliss. Do you ever long to just turn off your brain and completely tune in to something you know is garbage?  To release yourself from the stress that comes with your daily routine and succumb to trash-television? I don’t do it often (my favorite TV show is still West Wing) but damn do I love me The Bachelor franchise -- and this season of The Bachelorette is filled with that dirty, dirty drama I hate to love and love to hate.

Psst - keep it going with the weekly recap in the podcast Here to Make Friends, best listened to after a particularly depressing episode of The Daily.

3. Birchbox

The only weekly subscription service I subscribe to is called Birchbox -- and it’s amazing. It’s a monthly beauty box...and I look forward to it each and every month.  Birchbox says they’re here to help us find joy in beauty and in taking care of yourself, and I think they do a pretty great job of doing just that. Once a month, I’m surprised with face masks, mascara, hair products, face wash, eyeshadow, nailpolish -- anything under the moon that fits within the specifications I’ve given them.  It’s the small things, right? What’s more? It’s just $10 a month.

4. The Strategist

Talk about a rabbit hole of information you both very much need...and very much don’t!  The Strategist is powered by New York Magazine and it’s my favorite internet rabbit hole (sorry Reddit).  I get their e-blasts just about every other day containing things I obviously need to know, like where to find that cute AF laptop case Ali Wong used in Always Be My Maybe (it’s $16 on Amazon); or the “34 Things On Sale That You’ll Actually Want to Buy” (they are usually pretty spot-on); or my favorite, a list of 100 Best Pens, As Tested by Strategist Editors (I ordered three or four from this list..). My advice: Subscribe.

5. Crema Coffee Soda

Ok, on the DL, this is the best thing about summer.  Crema makes the best coffee soda, hands down, and I’m eager  for its return each and every summer. Well, folks, it’s B A C K for the season so  I am ending this list on a high note. Fun fact: you can snag yourself a Crema coffee soda at Crema’s location on Hermitage Ave, and also at SH’s Downtown Sporting Club / Pinewood Social.  HOLLA.
